Beloved former coach and Claiborne Parish native Anthony L. “Tony” Mullins returned to the local library last week, joined by his wife, Carol Carpenter Mullins, to share exciting news: the release of his debut children’s book, Evie.
Known to many as Coach Mullins from his time at Summerfield High School, Anthony’s new book brings to life a whimsical Halloween adventure rooted in his own childhood experiences. Evie tells the heartwarming and humorous tale of two mischievous brothers and a retired woman whose quiet evenings are unexpectedly filled with trickery and charm.
The book features original illustrations by artist James Hislope, a longtime friend of Mullins. The two collaborated closely to ensure the artwork seamlessly complements the story’s playful tone and nostalgic setting.
To celebrate the release, the Claiborne Parish Library will host an autograph party on Monday, Oct. 13 at 2 p.m. The event will include a special reading of Evie by Carol Mullins, and signed copies of the book will be available for $20—a thoughtful and entertaining gift for children this upcoming holiday season.
Coach Mullins expressed his hope to reconnect with former students, friends, and community members, encouraging everyone to stop by for an afternoon of stories and smiles.
Anthony and Carol Mullins share deep roots in Claiborne Parish. Carol is the daughter of Peggy and Harold Carpenter and was raised in the local community, while Anthony once served as a coach at Summerfield High. Today, the couple resides in Sarepta, where they manage a working homestead that includes native Louisiana brown and green cotton, used to create artisan home goods, as well as perique tobacco. They also operate a popular RV park, which draws visitors from across the country seeking rest and beauty in North Louisiana’s scenic countryside.
Mark your calendars for Oct. 13 and come support a local author! For more information, contact the Claiborne Parish Library.
