Lightning strike forces closure of Claiborne Parish Courthouse

The Claiborne Parish Courthouse remains closed following a lightning strike that caused significant damage to the building’s electrical system during severe storms that swept through the parish.

According to the Claiborne Parish Police Jury, the courthouse sustained extensive electrical damage when lightning struck the historic structure overnight. As a result, the Judge’s Office and all other offices housed within the courthouse have been closed indefinitely while officials assess the extent of the damage and determine necessary repairs.

Parish officials said the closure will remain in effect until the building can be safely restored and normal operations resumed.

Residents who need to conduct business with the Judge’s Office are encouraged to call (318) 624-4707, as the courthouse’s regular phone system is currently inoperable due to the electrical damage.

Despite the severity of the incident, parish leaders say a potentially much worse outcome was avoided thanks to the rapid response of local emergency personnel.

The Claiborne Parish Police Jury expressed its gratitude to the Homer Fire Department, Chief Tommy Sanders, and the department’s volunteers for their quick action during the emergency. Officials credited their response with preventing what could have been catastrophic damage to one of Claiborne Parish’s most recognizable historic landmarks.

The courthouse has long served as the center of government operations in Claiborne Parish and stands as an important piece of the community’s history.

Additional updates regarding repairs, reopening timelines, and temporary accommodations for courthouse services are expected to be released as assessments continue.

Residents are encouraged to monitor official Claiborne Parish Police Jury communications for the latest information regarding courthouse operations.
