CLAIBORNE PARISH, La. — Claiborne Parish 4-H has announced several deadlines and activities planned in conjunction with the upcoming Claiborne Parish Fair, including livestock entries, a pumpkin decorating contest, pet show and youth costume contest.
All livestock entries are due Saturday, Sept. 27, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Haynesville Fair Barn. The entry fee is $10 per animal and may be paid when entries are submitted. Poultry entries will cost $20 regardless of the number of birds entered. Animals must have met required possession deadlines to be eligible for the fair.
The Pumpkin Decorating Contest will also return for fair week. Painted pumpkins must be delivered to the Haynesville Fair Barn by 4 p.m. Monday, Sept. 28. Entries will be displayed and judged during the week, with awards presented for Best Theme, Most
Original, Scariest and Best Overall. Pumpkins must be painted rather than carved and should be picked up by the afternoon of Oct. 1.
The Claiborne Parish Fair Pet Show is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, at the Haynesville Fair Barn. Registration is $5 per pet and must be completed by Oct. 1 by contacting the Claiborne Parish 4-H office. Fees may be paid on the day of the show and should be made payable to the Claiborne 4-H Foundation.
Most animals may participate in the Pet Show as long as they are not dangerous, poisonous or more than 200 pounds. Animals must remain caged or leashed until their turn to show and cannot display aggressive behavior. Awards will include Best Costume,
Best Trick/Talent, Most Unique and Best Overall, with exhibitors’ showmanship skills also considered during judging.
Fair activities will continue at 1 p.m. Oct. 3 with the Costume Contest. Participation is free, and all costumes must comply with the Louisiana 4-H Code of Conduct. Awards will be presented for Most Original, Scariest, Funniest and Best Overall.
Competition age divisions include fourth through sixth grade, seventh through eighth grade and ninth through 12th grade. Second- and third-grade participants will receive participation ribbons.
Claiborne Parish 4-H is encouraging youth and families to prepare their entries now as the parish gets ready for another week of livestock competition, exhibits and community activities at the Claiborne Parish Fair.
