ATHENS, La. — The Claiborne Parish Police Jury will hold a community meeting in Athens on Monday, Sept. 28, to discuss sales tax propositions that will appear before voters in November and their connection to residential trash collection and other services in rural areas of the parish.

The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at Athens Town Hall on Highway 9.

The Police Jury announced the upcoming meeting after nearly 30 residents attended a similar community meeting in Summerfield on Monday evening.

According to information provided for the Athens meeting, officials plan to discuss how the current sales taxes work, residential trash pickup and what would occur if the proposed taxes are not approved. The parish currently provides weekly curbside household garbage collection in areas outside the incorporated municipalities of Homer and Haynesville.

Voters will consider two sales tax propositions on Nov. 3, 2026. One would authorize a 1.375% sales and use tax for 10 years beginning Jan. 1, 2027, with proceeds dedicated to solid waste collection and disposal and materials for maintaining public roads.

A separate proposition would authorize a 0.625% sales and use tax for 10 years for similar purposes within Sales Tax District No. 2.

The Athens meeting is intended to give residents an opportunity to learn more about the propositions, ask questions and provide input ahead of the November election.
