Recovery efforts continue at the Claiborne Parish Courthouse following a lightning strike that caused significant damage to the building’s electrical and operational systems earlier this month.
In an update released by the Claiborne Parish Police Jury, officials reported that power has now been restored to the courthouse and work is ongoing to repair and replace numerous systems affected by the strike.
As a result of the damage, all court dates have been postponed until the week of July 20-24 while repairs continue and critical courtroom functions are restored.
Parish officials said they are working with system vendors to address damage to a variety of courthouse operations, including:
Telephone systems
Information technology infrastructure
Courtroom video systems
Recording equipment
Other essential courtroom functions
The goal is to have the courtroom fully operational and ready to resume normal proceedings as quickly as possible.
In addition to courtroom repairs, officials are also addressing damage to the courthouse elevator. The Police Jury reported that the elevator is expected to be back in service by mid-July, pending completion of repairs.
The courthouse sustained extensive damage when a lightning strike impacted the historic building during severe weather that moved through the area. Emergency responders, including the Homer Fire Department, were credited with helping prevent even greater damage at the time of the incident.
The Claiborne Parish Police Jury stated that it continues to work closely with its insurance provider to facilitate repairs and ensure a smooth recovery process.
Officials expressed appreciation for the patience and understanding shown by residents, attorneys, court personnel, and others affected by the temporary disruption in courthouse operations.
Additional updates regarding courthouse services, courtroom availability, and the resumption of court proceedings are expected as repair work progresses.
Residents with questions regarding court schedules or courthouse operations are encouraged to contact the appropriate parish offices for the latest information.
